Rex was not a Priest when we married 37 years ago and quite honestly, neither one of us were active in church at that time. I met him right after he returned home from serving in Viet Nam. Like so many of our young men, he was hurting more than physically when he returned to the States. Both of us had attended the Episcopal Church in our youth and this was the church we both felt most comfortable with after our marriage. Once we had our first son we started attending church regularly. Rex immediately felt the call to serve in the lay ministry. When we attended Cursillo in the 70’s he was touched more deeply than either one of us had expected. It was at this weekend that he was told very clearly he was to be the “servant of the servant”.
For close to 30 years he served in every Lay Minister capacity that was available in the Church. During these 30 years he has experienced most of the pains and joys that any son, husband, father, grandfather, and businessman could have experienced. We are very proud of our two grown sons but yes, they too were normal teenagers at one time. We are now the proud grandparents of three beautiful grandchildren. They are truly our reward for those teen years.
Rex’s years of secular life experiences have given him the ability to not only understands the pains and joys others are experiencing but it allows him to do so with true compassion. He has not been spared any of the human hurts and challenges. I think entering the Priesthood later in life adds immensely to his ability to pastor to others. He has had first hand experience of war, death, birth, marriage, parenting, grand parenting, business, financial struggles, and the loss of parents.
I have been truly blessed to have been his partner these 37 years and look forward to many more years together.
